REVOLUTION & REDCOATS - Gibraltar

'The communciation or Gallery leading to St George's Hall, above Farringdon's Battery;
two works with the same nature under the Queen's Battery the Union Gallery and in the
rock above Prince of Hesse's Bastion; are so singularly contrived, and of so
formidable a nature, that all direct attacks by land, henceforward may be
considered as quixotism and insanity' -
Colonel John Drinkwater, History of
the Late Siege of Gibraltar, 1785

DAY 1: Arrive at Gibraltar Airport: Welcome dinner and talk

Day 2: 18th Century and the Great Siege

Today we'll explore the physical remains of the early British defensive works and we'll discuss the six stages of the Great Siege and explore the important works being undetaken to strengthen the defences even while the siege was being undertaken.

In the evening we'll return to the hotel for dinner and a talk.

Day 3: 19th Century and the Age of Great Guns

We'll start the day with an exploration of the work carried out under William Green during the 19th Century and then we'll meander along the western waterfront as we explore the important improvements being made along this side. This will take us into town where we'll be able to see the improvements made to the living conditions of the British forces. After lunch we'll move to Magdela Battery to see the 100-ton gun and others, while there we'll talk about the development of these behemoths and why they were required.

Day 4: World War II and The Tunnels

Today we'll look at the important role played by the harbour and talk about Force 'H' and the vital role Gibraltar played in Operation Pedestal, which saved the island of Malta. During the Second World War the next major phase of building work took place on Gibraltar, or rather 'in' Gibraltar, and we'll travel up to the new Tunnel Museum and explore the role that the tunnels had to play during the war and subsequently during the 'Cold War'.

Day 5: Return to the UK
