REVOLUTION & REDCOATS - Jacobite Uprising of 1745
The Jacobite rebellion of 1745 culminated in the last pitched battle ever fought on British soil,
and with the defeat of the Jacobite army at Culloden in 1746 it brought the curtain
down on almost one hundred years of political and religious strife in Scotland. Join
us to follow the Jacobite story back through the heart of Scotland.
On this tour we take you to explore the battlefields of Prestonpans, Falkirk
and the most famous, Culloden. Using contemporary maps and sketches we
trace the actions as they happened and see just exactly why the battles developed in the way that they did. This will involve a lot of field walking and exploring because what is defined by the national heritage bodies as 'the battlefield', isn't actually the whole battlefield.
As well as visiting Lord George Murray's originally planned site for the Battle of Culloden, near Dalcross, we also take in the siege sites of Stirling Castle and Ruthven Barracks and we follow part of the route of the infamous Jacobite night march which played a pivotal role in tiring the Jacobite army. Finally, we look at the aftermath of the '45 by visiting, Fort George, Fort Augustus, Fort William and then make a visit to emotive Glencoe.
No Jacobite tour would be complete without a visit to the Glenfinnan Monument, and on the final day we make a visit to this site before leaving for our return to Edinburgh. Our senior guide, Phil Adams, takes you to many unexplored places on the battlefields, explaining the actions, strategies and tactics so you get to understand the ground and the context which will add immeasurably to what you may already know. You will also hear about the politics, the wider implications and the men who fought, from generals to privates. Every evening there is a briefing by Phil on aspects of the Jacobite campaign from both a Jacobite and government perspective, and then an opportunity to go into more historical detail with Phil over dinner.
